Top 10 Reasons To Drink Aloe Vera Gel

Dr Peter Atherton is an Advisory Board Member of the Forever Living Products Company.  He lists 10 reasons why you should drink aloe vera gel.

Aloe Vera Gel dripping from leaf

1.  It is a Wonderful Drink for the Health.  Why?

By drinking the Aloe vera gel with all its important ingredients (often now deficient in food) including 20 amino acids needed by the human body and seven of the eight amino acids needed that just cannot be made by the body is able to get enough to allow complex enzyme related systems to work really well.

This means the body will function at 100%.  The net result to the individual is a wonderful feeling of wellbeing.

 2.  A Useful Source of Nutrients

Aloe Vera gel contains a larg range of vitamins,  even trace elements of vitamin B12 which is rarely found in plants. Apart from Vitamin A it contains B group vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and folic acid.  Many of these nutrients cannot be stored in the body so we need to consistently top them up from the food we eat.

What better way than by drinking a daily amount of Aloe Vera gel while at the same time building up the body’s defence system against oxidative stress.

3. A Useful Source of Minerals

Some of te minerals found in aloe vera include calcium, sodium, potassium, iron chromium, magnesium, manganese copper and zinc.  This is because the plant tends to grow in grass where soils are rich in these minerals and its roots are able to absorb and deliver them to use in  a very available manner.

4. Effect on Gut Flora   vector of gut flora related words

Aloe Vera is a natural gut balancer in many areas and nowhere more so than inside the gut where it tends to regulate the various bacteria and yeasts that inhabit it.  For example, if a person were to suffer with too much yeast  in the gut, regular ingestion of the gel would tend to reduce this overgrowth.

The same can be said of the more unfriendly bacteria that can accumulate in certain conditions.

5. Effects on the Musculoskeletal System  picture of musculoskeletal system

Certain substances  in the aloe such as the salicylic acid and the plant sterols are able to soothe muscles and maintain healthy joints mobility and flexibility.

6.  Increase the Activity of Fibroblasts

Fibroblasts are specialised cells found in the skin.  Their job is to produce fibre such as collagen and elastin. These fibres give the skin its structure and of course make it plump and elastic.  The more you have the younger your skin looks.

7.  Effect on  the Skin

picture of epidermis

When they are first produced deep in the epidermis, skin cells are rather large and very much alive but by the time they reach the surface after 21-28 days (in normal sin) they are a shadow of their former selves and are transformed into just thin flakes of keratin which eventually fall off.

Aloe vera gel provides the essential nutrition to feed the basal cells.  Therefore the skin remains healthy and is able to perform its vital functions more efficiently – as well as looking much better!

8. Balances the Immune System

Among the substances identified in aloe vera is a long chain sugar (polysaccharide) that is known to have an effect on the cytokine system – the chemical messengers of the immune system.  Therefore it can affect in a way that balances the system and so it can be considered to be called an immunomodulator.  In the USA this sugar as been extracted from aloe vera and made into a drug.

9.  Assists in Healthy Digestion

A healthy digestive tract ensures that nutrients from the food we eat are absorbed into our bloodstream.  There is clear clinical evidence that by drinking Aloe Vera gel, the bowel is able to absorb these nutrients more efficiently, especially protein.

I also suspect that many other substances are much better absorbed under its influence.

10.  Effect On the Gut

Aloe vera has a wonderfully beneficial action on bowel function which results in smooth and efficient transit of contents resulting in a softer bulkier stool making it easier to pass.

About Dr Peter Atherton

After a 30 year career in general medical practice, Peter developed an interest in complementary medicine and embarked on a 2 year research fellowship at Oxford University examining the medicinal qualities of Aloe Vera.  What he found convinced him of the efficacy of this plant and led him to use it in his practice.

He now writes and lectures on its qualities internationally and is regarded as one of hte world’s experts on the subject. He has also set up several clinical trials whose results  are persuading physicians to look seriously at its therapeutic potential.

He is the author of 2 books – the latest one being ‘Aloe Vera – The Medicine Plant’.

You may also be interested to note that Aloe Vera gel is also suitable for animals ranging from cats to horses.  More information is available in his book which is included in the literature pack you receive on becoming a Forever Living Business Owner.

In the pack you receive 18 Forever Living products to the value of £199.  These are at a 35% discount and it may well be for this reason you choose to sign up as the products range from £4 to over £100 depending  on which one you purchase.

Personally, my skin has overcome the eczema flare ups I used to have and this has been largely due to consuming the drinking gel and using the topical gelly on my skin.

I am aware of the many uses of aloe vera as I have used it for fevers, cold sores, cuts and bruises and also mixng it with olive oil to moisturise my face with.

You can’t go far wrong with Aloe Vera!

  • When I lived in California, my friend gave me a gorgeous aloe vera plant and told me to break off a piece and smear the insides onto my skin for health benefits and healing, which I did do, especially when I got a sunburn.  However, I have never heard of drinking aloe vera gel.  That is fascinating.  So where do you buy such a product, and do you recommend a particular brand of aloe vera gel?

    • Hi Babsie,

Forever Living aloe vera drinks are available from your nearest distributor.  You can also purchase online.

Forever is the top brand and rightly so…All their drinks contain between 81-98% aloe.  No water included. You can also buy aloe lotions and other products like Jojoba Shampoo and Conditioner…

Please contact me via email if you need to know more. I will be pleased to help you out.

  • What a fantastic tip on internal health.  I truly believe that many of our modern conditions in Western culture are a result of imbalance in our GI system, endocrine system (hormones and adrenal functions), and a lack of proper nutrition.  Gut health is a thing that is so neglected by many.  I think having these deficiencies leads to a higher risk of cancer and other health issues.

I just bought some coconut water yesterday and noticed that it also has Aloe Vera.Juice…never saw that before…so I was pleased to find your article.  So good…I’m going to make a point of drinking more of this.  I usually only drink water all day so this at least will be something new.  Thanks for the insight…really great job giving us a super healthy new option.

    • Hi Tim,

Yes, nature is full of remedies for our health and even animals know this.  They  instinctively reach for the right plant to eat to cure their ailments.

Us humans on the other hand are only just rediscovering nature’s medicine now.  Make sure you find Forever Living Brand as they have a patent on their stabilised aloe drinks.  This means the drink tastes as if it were freshly picked from the plant. It also contains the active nutrients.

Most other brands only taste of water. This is the main reason why I am a firm believer of the brand…they have their own aloe farms and the plants are hand filleted. Absolutely pesticide free.  For over 40 years.

  • Aloe Vera is an amazing. It’s been one of the ingredients I always look for in my body lotion and creams since it really soothes and nourished. I’ve seen the plant stems sold on beaches in the Caribbean as a cure for sunburn and although I’ve never tried it that way I’ve heard it really works. The idea of drinking aloe vera really intrigues me and makes me wonder why drinking this is something I’ve never heard of. How long has Dr. Atherton been in his advisory position and what is his background?

    • Hi Lynn, yes Aloe Vera is brilliant for our health..

I put Dr Atherton’s advisory position and his background towards the end of the article.  But to save you time, he has been with Forever Living as a board member for over 10 years.  He was a general practitioner for 30 years before doing a 2 year fellowship at Oxford University.

He travels worldwide giving lectures on the benefits of aloe vera and has written 2 best selling books on the subject.

If you have any further questions, please let me know Lynn.

  • I do use all natural aloe vera gel on my two eczema kids’ skin, especially after we go out in the sun, a cooling gel from the fridge does wonders. Sometimes when I’m feeling more energetic, I will even cut the real plant and apply it onto their skin. Your article is a great reminder that drinking it has its amazing benefits too! Gut flora is also something I’m working on for my kids, so an aloe vera drink will certainly help in this aspect too. Thanks for the informative post!

    • Brilliant Joo!

Your children will forever remember you lovingly applying the soothing gel  on their eczema patches.

I recommend either the Aloe Bits & Peaches drink or the Aloe Berry Nectar as they are more friendly to the tastebuds.

I’m glad you enjoyed the post!

  • I had no idea Aloe Vera was so nutritious for our bodies.  I am always looking for super foods that have many health benefits.  I did some research in Forever Aloe Vera Gel company just now, and they only use the gel part of the plant so its safe to drink as much as you want.  I have been on a flex seed liquid regimen, because it gives me a lot of energy.  I plan on adding Aloe Vera to my regimen because having a healthy gut all around means a healthier you.

I honestly can say that I learned something new today, thanks for sharing your knowledge of Aloe Vera.

    -Dora

    • Hi Dora, I am glad you would like to drink Aloe vera juice..  It is a supplement and as it is also a laxative if taken in large quantities.

I would suggest you start with 30ml before breakfast and after dinner.

As you get used to it, you can increase the quantity to 240ml spread over the course of a day.

Flaxseed for energy is new to me…I normally use the seedmeal as a treat when I have 1/2 an avocado, with 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal in the centre.  Topped up with a dollop of natural yoghurt.

It is good to meet you Dora!

  • I never knew you could drink Aloe vera.

I used to have an Aloe vera plant and I did know that it was good for a lot of different ailments, but had no idea that it came in a drinkable form or that you should be drinking it.

All those good vitamins and minerals.  What an amazing plant.Thank you for such an informative article. We really can learn something new everyday.

    • Hi Venus,

Yes Aloe vera is a brilliant tonic best taken in small doses as it can act as a laxative when taken in large ones.

I am pleased to enjoyed reading about it.  We definitely learn something new each day!

If you have any questions about aloe juice recipes feel free to leave a comment here and I will be pleased to oblige..

  • Excellent! I have been using aloe gel straight from the plant for a good bit of time now. Great information here. I honestly have only used it externally but I wish that I had known about ingesting it. Didn’t think that was actually a thing.

So if you could, I am curious, explain to me the long term effects of ingesting aloe. I wouldn’t think that it could be to harmful. Just want your view on it.

    Thank you!!!

    ~cheers

    • Hi Koby,

As the Aloe vera gel, Forever Living harvests, is hand filleted and grown on their private farmland without pesticides you can be assured that you are drinking a high quality and effective product.  The company is 40 years old and the drinks are what they first started retailing.

Aloe vera gel is a succulent plant which you already know is excellent for topical use.  If it is safe for putting on the skin without side effects, remember your skin absorbs what is put on it.  Many people I know drink the gel for all kinds of ailments.  It has 99.7% pure aloe in every drop. And stabilised to act like the fresh plant.

Personally, I use the drink for recovering from fevers, colds, eczema, headaches (rarely).  My mother drinks the Forever Freedom for arthritis and so does my Aunty.  Forever Freedom is aloe gel with added MSM, chondroitin and glucosamine.

Athletes drink it for increased mobility and faster recovery from sport activities. The list goes on.

I used to suffer from eczema herpeticum on the right side of my face.  It would take 3 weeks for it to heal.  When I started drinking the gel 6 years ago, I would only get a tiny number of sores and they healed in 3 days. I have one right now and am out of the gel.  So I used the topical Aloe Gelly and applied it on my lip.

Yes, even the gelly is edible and yes, my sore is healing!

  • This is information that I had never heard anything about before.  I have used Aloe Vera for many things, but I wasn’t aware that you could injest Aloe Vera.  It seems that it can have many beneficial benefits.  I have Crones Disease, it it seems that it could be benefically to helping my immune system, which always needs help and it seems it could help me have a healthier digestive system.  Are you aware of anyone having success with this product for anything similiar to this?  Also, can you purchase this product in regular stores, or do you need to purchase from some type of health store?

    • Hi Maria,

As aloe vera is considered medicine for the body and contains plenty of beneficial nutrients, it can be used for many different ailments including Crons Disease. It can be used even to recover from chemotherapy.

It is distributed to customers by individuals from all walks of life.  We are self-employed (that is business owners in our own right).  The parent company is based in the US, and there are branches in over 160 countries worldwide.

You can purchase Forever Living Aloe juice online.  If you want to know more information, please feel free to email me at stella@cleareczemanaturally.com

I will be happy to help you on your journey to better health.

      Regards, Stella

  • Whenever my eczema worsen, it is always due to low immune system caused by lack of sleep. And what I did was to apply pure aloe vera gel on my skin. It was really soothing but only gives temporary solution. If I am taking the drink that you recommend here, how much time needed for my eczema to be healed?

    • Hi Florence,

This depends on how long you have had the eczema and how toxic  your body is.

It is possible to become 100% clear of eczema like myself.  I cut out sugary drinks and floury food. I also did bowel cleansing and liver flushing…as mentioned here https://cleareczemanaturally.c

I used Aloe Gelly topically and drank 60oz of the juice twice a day before meals.  I do not drink coffee as that actually adds to stress.  I try to get to sleep by 10.30pm unless I have an extra bout of energy and want to write for my blog.

If you have any further questions, feel free to drop me a line.  I will be happy to help you.

      All the best,

      Stella

  • I have never heard of drinking Aloe vera gel. I have had aloe vera juice. What is the difference between doing one versus the other?

I have seen aloe vera gel in drug stores and have heard tips about using it when it comes to healing sunburns or other skin conditions and rashes.

    • Hi Jessie, aloe vera gel is another name for aloe juice.

However, Forever Living brand is stabilised to function like the fresh leaf. It has 99.7% in every drop of gel.  Very high quality.  Most other brands taste of water because they contain mostly water.

You can only buy this brand from Forever Living business owners.  It is not sold in shops..

If you need any more informtion, feel free to contact me on this post.

      All the best, Stella

  • I absolutely had no idea that Aloe Vera was so incredibly beneficial. Probably my favorite benefit is it’s effect of gut health. Certainly other benefits I fault either, but I feel that in nowadays environment so many people are opting regularly for processed foods, which is a detriment to the gut health. And something like Aloe Vera seem to really be able to at least somewhat help with that.

Me and my wife – we used to drink it rather often just because we liked how it tasted and the drink we had was without added sugar or other additives. Had we known all the benefits that it actually provides, we would have tried finding a way to incorporate it into our budget regularly.

Nonetheless, I’ll forward this article to her right now, I bet she’ll be ecstatic. We’ll probably be having some Aloe Vera tonight, haha.

Cheers and thank you for all the valuable information. I sincerely appreciate it! <3

    Have a Great One!Matiss

    • Hi Matiss,

Yes, aloe vera is like a vitamin, mineral and prebiotic all-in-one.  Once you start seeing the difference it makes to your health and wellbeing, you drink it forever!

Have a pleasant week ahead, both of you..

      All the best,

      Stella

  • Now a days I’m hearing usage of aloe Vera is used in so many products like soaps, Gels, Body lotions, Shampoos..etc. I often used pure gel of aloevera for my hair to reduce dandruff. But I don’t think so it is good for drinking. But after seeing this article, I come to know this much of benefits we have. And can you display some products related to this?

    • Hi there, Kiran!

Please let me know what country you live in and I will point you to some Forever Living distributors who sell Aloe Vera Juice…

  • Thank you for your most informative and valuable article.  I believe Aloe Vera Gel is used quite frequently on sunburnt skin and also accidental burns to the skin.  It definitely has a cooling and balming effect.  When I’ve used Aloe Vera in gel form, it has always brought immediate and soothing relief.
I can highly recommend it to anyone wondering if it is a viable product to use.

    • Yes,

Aloe vera is also useful for insect stings.  I was once stung by a bee and happened to have a tube of aloe gelly in my bag at the time.

I applied it to my foot where I had been stung and the swelling went down in 15 minutes!

By the next morning, my foot was fine as if nothing had happened..I have also used it for when I accidentally caught my finger in the door.  I kept my nail…
